Concerns about AI

Since AI has come on the scene, there has been a full spectrum of opinions on how it will affect us. At one end of the spectrum, AI presents real and present danger to humanity, and on the other, the promise of helping us solve not only our current problems, but the mysteries of the universe. No doubt, AI already is and will have an extraordinary impact on our world.

I suggest that this impact will be a direct reflection of who we are being - our collective consciousness and prominent world-view. This is an important notion. AI will reflect back to us both our darkness and our light. AI could increase our experience of separation and suffering, or it could help connect, unite and free us. I wonder which path humanity is likely to take with this new tool in our hands. Will AI become a weapon or a wonder? There is potential for both.

I am personally an optimist. I trust the unfolding of life. What will be will be. But I have also been learning patience, and not everything in life unfolds with my desired timing or outcomes. I practice taking responsibility for co-creating my experience in this dance of life and understand that my choices have an impact on what unfolds, knowing that much of how life unfolds is beyond my control.

By extension, the collective choices of groups, communities, countries, companies and institutions have an impact too. Through our choices, we all have some impact and responsibility for how AI or anything else for that matter will impact us. We can choose to play the part of a victim, fool, king/queen, warrior, healer, or sage. Those choices are ours to make. We can choose how we show up in the world and how we react or respond to conditions in the outer world.

With all that said, and despite my optimism, I must admit that I am concerned. I am concerned, because the impact of AI, good or bad, will be a symptom of something more fundamental. AI is an effect, not cause. I am concerned about the current state of human consciousness that is creating and using AI. I choose to concern myself with cause rather than effect.

I just have to look around at the growing division within our societies. While we have made incredible advances in other technologies, it seems that we have used them to increase our separation rather than unite us. I notice the proliferation of anxiety, depression, drug-addictions, suicide, and despair. I notice the fragmentation of communities, increases in chronic disease, collapsing institutions, the growing division between the ultra-rich and the poor, the never-ending wars, polarized politics, consumerism, extraction economies, and the destruction of ecosystems to name but a few.

There appears to be growing greed, blame, shame, hate, corruption, dishonesty, manipulation, distrust, and fear. Technologies such as Social Media have only increased these tendencies. These ‘darker, disconnecting natures’ of humanity are having and will have an impact on how AI is developed and used. Unless we make a monumental shift in the way we are being, within ourselves and with each other, AI will only accelerate our dip into the darkness.     

Going back to my optimist, what can we each do to have a real and lasting impact on and for our world?

My answer? As Gandhi said, We can choose to BE the change we seek.

We can each be the source of problems or the source of solutions and new insight. We can take personal responsibility for our darker natures, forgive and heal. We can take a firm stand and get engaged from our better natures - with firm love, caring and kindness. Individually and together, united, we can make this great shift. By connecting to and leading from our infinitely more powerful natural intelligence, intuitive insights and wisdom, AI development will follow our lead and could be of great service.  

Personally, I am experiencing that a positive shift in our consciousness is very much in motion and accelerating. I am noticing the change showing up in the many groups and movements I have had the privilege to take part in. I am meeting other facilitators, coaches and leaders that are answering the inner call to awaken, change and lead in the transformation.

We are experiencing a deep sense of belonging as we notice new insight and possibilities consistently drop into our awareness. We are growing and expanding together.
